DRC Mines Minister Launches MICKA Copper Exploration Project to Unlock Kasai Mineral Potential

The Minister of Mines, Louis Watum Kabamba, has officially launched geological prospecting activities in Mbuji-Mayi, Kasai-Oriental Province, as part of the MICKA project (Kasai Copper Mines), a new initiative aimed at assessing the region’s copper potential and supporting long-term mining development.

The minister arrived at Mbuji-Mayi airport on Thursday, 25 June, where he was received by local authorities and a large gathering of residents.

Public interest in the visit was reflected in crowds lining major roads in the city to welcome the delegation.

Following official engagements with the provincial governor, the minister proceeded to Miabi alongside members of parliament, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Mines, and senior officials from mining sector agencies.

The central event of the visit was the official launch of the MICKA geological exploration programme, a partnership involving MIBA, LBK Construction SARL, and China Railway Resources Universal (CRRU).

The project is focused on conducting geological surveys to better define copper resources in Greater Kasai and to support future mining investment in the region.

Strengthening geological knowledge for development

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Watum Kabamba stated that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy, under the leadership of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi and coordination of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, to develop the country’s natural resources in a way that supports economic growth and local development.

The event also featured the signing of a memorandum of understanding between MIBA and CRRU, followed by the symbolic launch of exploration activities on the ground.

The minister emphasised that improved geological understanding of the subsoil is essential for attracting investment, developing new mining projects, and generating employment opportunities and revenue for local communities.

Regional development outlook

Through the MICKA project, the government aims to strengthen geological research in Greater Kasai, a region considered to hold significant untapped mineral potential.

The initiative is expected to contribute to broader efforts to diversify and expand the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining sector beyond its established copper and cobalt regions.

Officials say the programme forms part of a wider strategy to transform Kasai into a new mining development hub through systematic exploration and structured investment partnerships.
