Investors Remain Bullish on Zambia as Copper Rally Strengthens Market Outlook

Zambia Attracts Investor Confidence as Copper Prices Boost Assets and Economic Outlook

Investor confidence in Zambia remains resilient, with rising copper prices, improving economic conditions and expectations of continued policy stability supporting demand for the country’s financial assets.

Despite heightened uncertainty following the August 13 general election, international investors have largely maintained a positive view of Zambia, focusing on the country’s improving fiscal position, debt restructuring progress and its growing importance in the global copper supply chain.

Major global investment firms and financial institutions, including William Blair, Bank of America, AllianceBernstein and Citigroup, have expressed a constructive outlook on Zambia.

Analysts say the continuation of economic reforms and the prospect of renewed engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could provide an additional anchor for investor confidence.

Copper rally supports the kwacha

Zambia’s economic prospects remain closely tied to copper, which accounts for a significant share of the country’s export earnings.

The recent rally in copper prices has provided further support for the Zambian economy and financial markets.

Copper has gained about 15% this year, while the kwacha has strengthened by approximately 16% against the US dollar, supported by higher copper prices and increased demand for local-currency assets.

The stronger currency has also helped reinforce investor sentiment, although the outlook remains exposed to movements in global commodity prices.

Zambia is pursuing an ambitious plan to more than triple annual copper production, targeting 3 million tonnes by 2031. The strategy is expected to require substantial investment in new and existing mines, infrastructure, power supply and supporting services.

Strong demand for Zambian debt

Investor appetite has also extended to Zambia’s government securities.

Following the country’s debt restructuring, demand for local-currency government bonds has increased significantly.

According to market data cited in the report, Zambian local-currency debt has delivered returns of almost 37% this year, the strongest performance among African markets.

The country’s sovereign risk premium over US Treasuries has also narrowed, indicating an improvement in how international investors perceive Zambia’s credit outlook.

Meanwhile, the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) index gained more than 2% in August, adding to evidence of renewed interest in Zambian assets.

Citigroup has taken a positive position on both the kwacha and Zambian credit, reflecting expectations that the currency could record further gains if copper prices remain supportive and macroeconomic conditions continue to improve.

Zambia’s copper opportunity

Beyond short-term market movements, investors are increasingly viewing Zambia through the lens of the global copper supply deficit and growing demand for the metal.

Copper is expected to play an increasingly important role in electrification, renewable energy, power infrastructure and data-centre development, including infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence.

Zambia’s substantial copper resources therefore give it an opportunity to attract additional long-term investment as manufacturers and economies seek secure supplies of critical minerals.

Recent interest from international investors reflects this broader trend. India, for example, has resumed discussions with Zambia over potential investments in copper and other critical minerals as it seeks to secure long-term supplies for its expanding economy.

Outlook remains positive

Analysts increasingly describe Zambia as a reform and recovery story, with the combination of debt restructuring, stronger copper earnings and fiscal reforms helping to rebuild investor confidence.

However, sustaining that confidence will require continued fiscal discipline, policy consistency and progress in addressing structural constraints, particularly energy supply and infrastructure.

For now, the combination of elevated copper prices, a stronger kwacha, improving access to capital and Zambia’s ambition to significantly expand copper production is keeping international investors focused on the country.

If the mining investment pipeline continues to expand and production targets are progressively achieved, Zambia could strengthen its position as one of Africa’s most important copper investment destinations.
