Zambia’s largest mining company is forging ahead in its quest to engage more local people in its supply chain to strengthen Zambian-owned businesses and boost the local economy. The company procured US$1.65 billion (K36.3 billion) of goods and services from companies registered in Zambia in 2020, representing 85% of the total spending by its two mines: Kansanshi in Solwezi and Sentinel in Kalumbila. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially begun operations at Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC), a state-owned company with monopoly rights to the purchase and sale of the country’s hand-mined cobalt. EGC, created a year ago to help control artisanal supplies and boost government revenue through price controls, will sell cobalt hydroxide under a five-year contract with trading house Trafigura. The non-exclusive supply deal will also see Trafigura finance the creation of strictly controlled artisanal mining zones, buying centres and logistics to trace supply. Diversified miner Glencore has confirmed that its 81.2%-owned subsidiary Carlia Investments Corp has completed the the sale of its interest in Mopani Copper Mines to Zambian State-owned ZCCM Investment Holdings (ZCCM-IH). Glencore retains offtake rights in respect of Mopani’s production.
