South Africa’s mining industry estimates it will cost around R300-million to help the government roll out Covid-19 vaccines to mineworkers and community members as the country battles a surge in infections, the industry body told Reuters on Thursday. The Minerals Council, which represents mining firms, offered its financial and logistical assistance after the government called on the private sector to help with the rollout of vaccines, the first of which are set to arrive on Monday. Gold price set for worst January in 10 years

Gold prices opened in the red on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve kept its monetary policy unchanged without promising any more aid, supporting the dollar as the preferred safe haven asset. Investor sentiment reversed later in the session as bullion recovered from earlier losses. Spot gold was up 0.5% to $1,853.65 an ounce by 11:40 a.m. EST, while US gold futures gained 0.3% and traded at $1,851.10 an ounce. Anglo American H2 production back up to 95%

Anglo American plc (LSE: AAL.L) copper production increased by 6% to 167,800 tonnes in Q4, compared to 158,800 tonnes in Q4 2019, largely due to secured access to industrial water at Los Bronces copper mine in Chile, the company reported on Thursday. Production at Los Bronces increased by 34% to 95,900 t for the quarter. Zimbabwe miners say foreign-exchange rule could trigger crisis

Mining companies in Zimbabwe said a central-bank requirement compelling them to surrender more foreign exchange earned from mineral exports will push their operations to the brink. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe on Jan. 8 announced that exporters must now hand over 40% of their foreign currency earnings, up from 30%, which is then paid out in the local currency. The country’s mining body said the move would create “a viability crisis” for the industry as members already face increased demand for payment in hard currency from various government agencies, suppliers… Read More Here

Zambia`s opposition MMD Leader advises govt to begin transferring back Mopani into private hands

MMD president Nevers Mumba says up to today the former ruling party does not believe government is the best businessman there is in town. Commenting on the transaction in which the government through ZCCM-IH has purchased back 90 per cent Glencore shareholding in Mopani for US$1 with $1.5 billion, among other conditions, Mumba noted that the government had no option but to repossess the mine. Mumba advised the government not to be tempted to run Mopani but start transferring it back in to private hands. “And when I say private… Read More Here

All the mines Tesla needs to build 20 million cars a year

Elon Musk and his merry band of executive vice presidents had plenty of advice for the mining and metals industry at the company’s Battery Day event in September, where the road map to a $25,000 Tesla was laid out. How easy it is to mine lithium (just add salt), just how much of it there is in Nevada (enough for 300 million EVs), how to be environmentally friendly (“put the chunk of dirt back where it was”) and, given these facts, why miners haven’t been trying harder.  Since lithium is “just like… Read More Here
