“Mopani takeover” Just what Zambia needed – Civil Society Organisations

GOVERNMENT’S decision to take over operations of Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding 15,000 jobs which could have been lost had the mining firm remained in private hands. A consortium of civil society organisations (CSOs), in welcoming Government’s 100 percent shareholding in MCM, says mines should contribute more tocommunities in which they operate. Last week, Government, through Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines-Investment Holding (ZCCM-IH), took over operations of MCM from the majority shareholder, Glencore of Switzerland. This has cheered the CSOs, which include PeacefulElections Zambia (PEZ), Faith Foundation… Read More Here

Biden urged to reinstate sanctions on Israeli tycoon over DRC deals

Two rights groups on Monday urged the new US administration of Joe Biden to reverse former president Donald Trump’s last-minute easing of sanctions on an Israeli billionaire accused of corruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The US State Department hit Dan Gertler with sanctions in December 2017 for “opaque and corrupt mining deals” struck with help from his friend, then Congolese President Joseph Kabila. Washington claims Gertler deprived the DRC of $1.4 billion in tax revenues over the past decade. Now “during the final days of the Trump presidency,… Read More Here

Copper price defies pullback predictions

Copper prices held steady on Monday despite expectations that its rapid recovery in recent months will reverse due to another virus outbreak in China and lower business activities around the globe. Copper is trading at $3.626 a pound or about $8,000 a tonne on the Comex, still near an eight-year high. The bellwether metal is up more than 80% since demand tanked in the first half of 2020 as coronavirus lockdowns floored industrial activity. Reasons for the expected lull include scrap, which typically starts to emerge at high prices, and the risk… Read More Here

Zimbabwe seeks to list company holding State mining assets

Zimbabwe, banking on mining to end two decades of economic stagnation, plans to list the company in which it has placed state mining assets to raise cash to meet government obligations, the nation’s finance minister said. Late last year, the government created Kuvimba Mining House, in which the state pension fund and sovereign wealth fund hold 65%, to house its holdings in platinum, gold and nickel. It intends to use revenue from the company to meet a laundry list of requirements ranging from compensating White farmers for infrastructure on farms… Read More Here

Trump eased sanctions on mining tycoon Dan Gertler before leaving

Former US president Donald Trump quietly eased sanctions on Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler, related to alleged corruption and abusive mining practices in the Democratic Republic of Congo, just five days before leaving the White House. The order, issued on Jan. 15, followed an appeal by lobbyists working for Gertler, including lawyer Alan Dershowitz, who helped represent Trump during his first impeachment, The New York Times reported. Washington sanctioned Gertler in 2017 under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, which froze any US assets he held and banned him from dealing in US dollars or with any… Read More Here
