Zambia could win its bid to buy the Mopani Copper Mine stake from Glencore

Glencore has been locked in a bitter dispute with the other owners of the mine its plan to mothball Mopani’s operations. However, lots of questions remain as it remains unclear how the cash-strapped government, which last week defaulted on a Eurobond interest payment, would finance any deal. (Zambia state-owned ZCCM Investments Holdings is trying to acquire. ZCCM-IH currently has 10% of Mopani, with Glencore holding 73.1% and Vancouver-based First Quantum Minerals Ltd. 16.9%.) Glencore has assigned a value of $704 million to the operations. This would go some way to recoup impairments of… Read More Here

Copper surged in the international market to trade at $ 7,013 per tonne

During its meeting on Tuesday, November 17 with Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga, the Economic Conjuncture Committee (CCE) noted the rise in metals on the international market. Copper has seen a good trade at 7,013 USD per tonne on the international market.   The members of the CCE have during the examination of the note of the mining sector, presented by the Deputy Minister of Mines, Denise Lupetu, revealed that for Cobalt, the price has however experienced a slight negligible regression, while the prices of other mining products, are on the rise… Read More Here

Billionaire Gertler Buys Royalty Rights in Congo Cobalt Project

A company controlled by Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler, who is under U.S. sanctions for alleged corruption, bought rights from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s state mining company to royalties from one of the world’s largest cobalt projects. While the contract was published by the mining company Gecamines in October, it was signed in June 2017 — six months before the U.S. government blacklisted the businessman for “opaque and corrupt mining and oil deals” in Congo. Gertler has never been charged with a crime and denies any wrongdoing, and he’s hired… Read More Here

Blu Rock reports high Epiroc SmartROC D65 performance at Glencore’s Mutanda cobalt mine

Tough drilling conditions goes with the territory in Africa’s Copperbelt which straddles the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. No less than 70% of the world’s cobalt is also mined here, most of which is found in the Katanga Province of the DRC. As global demand for cobalt soars in tandem with the flourishing battery industry that it supports, one open pit mine in particular – Mutanda – has drawn more and more attention. This comes as no surprise given that it holds the world’s largest deposit… Read More Here

Brazil to export uranium, if mine proceeds

A mining project seen as a priority by the Brazilian government would turn the nation into a uranium exporter and reduce its fertilizer import needs if it proceeds. Latin America’s largest economy, which currently imports uranium for its nuclear plants and ships in most of its fertilizer needs, will become more self-sufficient with a $400 million project in the nation’s impoverished northeast, according to the consortium formed to explore the deposit. State-owned INB, which has a monopoly on uranium production in Brazil, formed a consortium with local fertilizer firm Galvani… Read More Here

Carbon filler improves Lithium-ion battery performance

New research published in Applied Physics Reviews claims to offer a solution to the issue of lithium-ion batteries not being able to provide high power output while simultaneously allowing reversible energy storage.  The solution, presented by scientists with the University of Texas at Austin, Stony Brook University, and the Brookhaven National Laboratory shows how the inclusion of conductive fillers improves battery performance. In their paper, the researchers say the optimum battery design involves thick electrode structures to enhance energy density. However, such a design suffers from poor lithium-ion transport, a key step in… Read More Here

Copper price surges on Peru worries as China Launches Future

Copper prices set fresh multiyear highs on Monday over worries about possible supply disruptions following unrest in Peru and optimism about the launch of a Chinese futures contract open to international investors. On the Comex market, copper for delivery in December gained 2.7% to $3.2625 a pound ($7,193 a tonne) amid heavy buying, with more than $8.3 billion worth of metal traded by mid-afternoon in New York. Monday’s trading brings the bellwether metal’s recovery since the height of the covid-19 induced sell-off, which sent the copper price crashing to below… Read More Here
