Global copper company First Quantum Minerals Ltd has contracted with MECS Inc, a subsidiary of Elessent Clean Technologies, for the Kansanshi Smelter Expansion at the Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, Zambia.  The MECS scope will include a redesign of the existing sulphur-burning sulphuric acid plant into a copper smelter off-gas recovery sulphuric acid plant. Panama’s construction workers’ union blocked highways and marched on congress on Monday to demand that lawmakers reject a contract with Canadian miner First Quantum Minerals. Union leader Saul Mendez said the contract violates national sovereignty by granting the company control of land, air and maritime space and does not do enough to protect workers’ rights.
