How Virtual Reality Makes Geology More Accessible
Geologists at the University of Washington have completed a virtual field visit to the Whaleback anticline in Pennsylvania, where decades of coal mining have exposed 300-million-year-old folds in the bedrock. After resorting to a similar web-based tool during the early days of the covid-19 pandemic, the researchers recently launched a version that allows people to wear virtual reality headsets to explore the geological site in detail and from different perspectives.
