CAMI Chief Urges Greater Geological Investment to Strengthen DRC’s Control Over Its Mining Wealth

DRC Must Invest More in Geological Research to Maximize Mining Potential and Attract Quality Investors, Says CAMI Director

The Democratic Republic of Congo must significantly increase investment in geological research if it is to strengthen state control over its vast mineral resources and unlock greater value from its mining sector, according to Cadastre Minier (CAMI) Director General Popol Mabolia.

Speaking during the fifth edition of CAMI’s press forum in Kinshasa, held under the theme “Where Are We Today?”, Mabolia emphasized that a deeper understanding of the country’s mineral potential is essential for improving resource management, attracting responsible investors and ensuring that Congolese citizens benefit more fully from the nation’s natural wealth.

Mabolia noted that several state-owned mining companies, including SOKIMO, Gécamines and MIBA, continue to hold significant mining permits and concessions but currently generate little or no production from many of these assets.

While some joint ventures remain operational, he stressed that greater geological knowledge is needed to support informed investment decisions and revitalize underutilized mining properties.

He also reaffirmed CAMI’s role as the gateway to the mining sector and highlighted digital transformation as a key pillar of the institution’s modernization strategy.

According to Mabolia, the agency is working to fully digitize its services, ultimately allowing investors to apply for and obtain mining titles online. The ongoing cleanup and verification of the national mining cadastre remains a central part of this reform process.

The forum brought together several institutions involved in the governance and development of the mining industry, including the National Geological Service of Congo (SGNC), the Centre for Evaluation, Expertise and Certification (CEEC), and the Technical Cell for Mining Coordination and Planning (CTCPM).

Representatives from the National Geological Service provided an update on efforts to improve geological knowledge through airborne geophysical surveys being conducted in partnership with international geoscience company Xcalibur.

The mapping program is expected to enhance understanding of the DRC’s subsurface resources and provide valuable data for future exploration activities.

SOKIMO officials used the event to outline the challenges facing the state-owned gold company and appealed for additional support in securing mining permits that could help expand operations and restore production growth.

Meanwhile, KoBold Metals Country Director Benjamin Katabuka highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in mineral exploration.

He urged government institutions to make geological data generated through national research programs more accessible to investors, arguing that reliable data is critical for attracting credible exploration companies and accelerating discoveries.

The Centre for Evaluation, Expertise and Certification also showcased its role in strengthening state oversight of mineral exports.

Officials explained that modernized laboratory equipment now allows the agency to identify mineral by-products more accurately, helping authorities determine the full value of exported minerals and reduce revenue losses associated with undeclared resources.

The discussions underscored a common message among stakeholders: improving geological knowledge, modernizing institutions and increasing transparency will be essential if the DRC is to fully capitalize on its world-class mineral endowment and strengthen national control over the mining sector.
