First Quantum’s 20-year deal on Cobre Panama now official

First Quantum Minerals (TSX: FM) says the law governing the mining concession for its Cobre Panama copper mine was passed and published in the Official Gazette of Panama on Oct. 20. Thus ends a period of uncertainty that began last year for the company. The Panamanian government last December ordered First Quantum to halt operations at Cobre Panama amid disagreements during contract negotiations, which later broke down. Talks eventually resumed and the parties reached an agreement in March. First Quantum had estimated that suspensions at the mine which lasted for… Read More Here

This new strategic importance stems from copper’s criticality to a wide range of clean and renewable energy technologies, such as waste heat recovery and electric vehicles, which can reduce global GHG emissions by two-thirds. Sibanye-Stillwater and Implats Dismiss Concerns Over Potential Mine Closures

South African platinum group metal (PGM) producers say they have taken steps to minimise mine closures, but they also acknowledge the downturn in prices may result in shorter mine lives or lower production. Bank of America said in a report today that PGM producers will be forced to shutdown mines, some permanently, following a heavier and swifter correction in PGM prices this year, particularly in palladium and rhodium. “We find ourselves asking how supply will respond in the face of weak prevailing prices. With cash flow under pressure at many mines,… Read More Here

Zimbabwe Plans to Replace US Dollar by 2025, but Scepticism Abounds

Zimbabwe’s largest independent asset manager predicts that the US dollar will continue to be the dominant currency in the country, even beyond the government’s December 2025 deadline to phase it out of the economy. This trend has been expedited due to government measures taken in July to limit the availability of the local currency in order to maintain its value.
