DRC Expands Geophysical Mapping Programme to Unlock New Mineral Discoveries

DRC Targets 697,000 km² of Geophysical Mapping by 2029 to Accelerate Mineral Exploration and Mining Investment

The Democratic Republic of Congo is significantly accelerating its geological exploration efforts through an ambitious geophysical mapping programme designed to improve knowledge of the country’s vast mineral potential and attract new mining investment.

Under the National Geological Mapping and Mineral Resource Assessment Programme (PC2G), authorities aim to expand geophysical coverage from approximately 209,000 square kilometres to 697,000 square kilometres by 2029, substantially increasing the amount of geological data available to investors and exploration companies.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the DRC’s position as one of the world’s leading mining jurisdictions by providing more accurate information on mineralized zones and previously underexplored regions.

Improved geological data is widely regarded as a critical factor in reducing exploration risk and encouraging investment in new mining projects.

Government officials believe the programme will help reveal additional deposits of strategic minerals, including copper, cobalt, lithium, gold, tin and rare earth elements, which are increasingly sought after for the global energy transition and advanced manufacturing industries.

The expansion of geophysical mapping is expected to enhance the country’s understanding of its subsurface resources while improving the efficiency of future exploration campaigns.

By identifying high-potential mineral targets, authorities hope to attract major mining companies and junior explorers looking for new development opportunities.

The programme also supports the government’s broader objective of transforming the mining sector into a stronger driver of economic growth.

Better geological knowledge can accelerate project development, increase mineral discoveries and generate additional revenues for both national and provincial governments.

Industry experts have long argued that large areas of the DRC remain geologically underexplored despite the country’s reputation as one of the most mineral-rich nations in the world.

Expanding geophysical surveys is therefore considered a strategic investment that could unlock significant new resource opportunities.

As global demand rises for critical minerals needed in electric vehicles, battery storage systems and renewable energy technologies, the DRC is seeking to strengthen its competitiveness by improving geological information and making exploration opportunities more attractive to investors.

The expanded mapping programme is expected to play a key role in supporting future mineral discoveries, boosting investor confidence and reinforcing the DRC’s position as a leading supplier of strategic minerals to global markets.
