Zambia Fast-Tracks Mingomba Copper Mine as KoBold Metals Expands Investment
Zambia Accelerates Mingomba Copper Project as KoBold Metals Advances High-Grade Mine Development
The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the development of the Mingomba Copper Mine, one of the country’s most promising new mining ventures, as technology-driven exploration company KoBold Metals advances plans for large-scale copper production.
During discussions with KoBold Metals executives, Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane emphasized the government’s determination to support strategic mining investments that can boost copper output, attract foreign capital, and contribute to Zambia’s broader economic transformation.
The Mingomba project, located in the resource-rich Copperbelt Province, has gained international attention due to its exceptionally high-grade copper deposit.
KoBold Metals, a California-based company backed by prominent investors including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, is using advanced artificial intelligence and data analytics to redefine how mineral discoveries are made and developed.
Government officials view the project as a critical component of Zambia’s ambition to increase national copper production significantly over the coming decade.
The mine is expected to contribute to job creation, strengthen local supply chains, generate export earnings, and reinforce Zambia’s position as one of the world’s leading copper-producing nations.
Musokotwane highlighted the importance of maintaining a predictable investment environment and ensuring that major mining projects move rapidly from exploration to production.
He noted that the development of new mines such as Mingomba is essential to achieving Zambia’s long-term economic growth objectives, particularly as global demand for copper continues to rise due to the expansion of renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and modern infrastructure.
KoBold Metals has continued to invest heavily in exploration and resource evaluation at Mingomba, where drilling campaigns have confirmed a substantial high-grade deposit.
The company believes the project has the potential to rank among the most significant copper discoveries in Zambia in recent years.
The government’s support for the project reflects a broader strategy to attract investment into the mining sector while expanding value creation within the country.
Authorities are increasingly focused on ensuring that new mining developments generate sustainable benefits through employment, skills development, infrastructure improvements, and opportunities for local businesses.
As development plans progress, the Mingomba Copper Mine is expected to play a pivotal role in helping Zambia meet its ambitious copper production targets and strengthening the country’s position in global critical minerals supply chains.
The project also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in mining, with KoBold Metals demonstrating how advanced technology can improve the speed and precision of mineral discovery, ultimately reducing exploration risk and accelerating mine development timelines.
