DRC Achieves 23% Rating for Mineral Resource Governance (Study)
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) received a provisional rating of 23% in alignment with the African mining vision, as revealed during an awareness seminar on sustainable mineral resource management in the Central African States (ECCAS) held on March 22, 2024.
These findings stem from an evaluation study conducted on the governance of mineral resources in the DRC. The study assessed various aspects, including the legal framework, geological information systems, taxation and income management, linkages, investments and diversification, artisanal small-scale mining, and environmental and social issues, based on criteria established by the African Mining Development Center.
According to Jean-Pierre Okenda, a civil society actor and member of the evaluation team, the DRC’s score places it in an intermediate phase concerning alignment with the African mining vision.
He emphasized the need for deliberate policies to better align with the vision, particularly in areas such as legal frameworks and linkages with other sectors.
Marit Kitaw of the African Mining Development Center acknowledged the DRC’s progress in certain areas, particularly in legal frameworks.
However, she highlighted significant gaps, especially in the integration of mining with other sectors and the empowerment of institutions.
Kitaw emphasized the importance of addressing these gaps and offered support to the DRC in its efforts to advance towards the African mining vision.
Overall, while recognizing progress, both Okenda and Kitaw stressed the need for continued efforts and collaboration to bridge existing gaps and enhance alignment with the African mining vision in the DRC.
