Ramaphosa Visits Richards Bay Minerals to Highlight Mining Sector’s Economic Impact
President Cyril Ramaphosa Tours Richards Bay Minerals Operations in KwaZulu-Natal
Cyril Ramaphosa visited the Rio Tinto-owned Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) mining operations in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, underscoring the mine’s significant contribution to employment, industrial development and economic growth in South Africa.
During his visit to the Richards Bay site, President Ramaphosa toured the mining facilities and engaged with employees as part of ongoing discussions on the role of the mining industry in supporting local communities and strengthening the national economy.
The President was welcomed by Werner Duvenhage, Managing Director of RTIT Africa Operations, along with Wilhemina Ngcobo, Mandisa Mabaso, Sicelo Ndiweni and Sam Ngaka.
Richards Bay Minerals, jointly owned by Rio Tinto, is recognised as one of the world’s leading producers of mineral sands, including ilmenite, rutile and zircon.
These minerals are widely used in industries such as paints, plastics, ceramics and sunscreen manufacturing, supporting both domestic production and export markets.
RBM remains one of the largest employers in the Richards Bay region, generating direct and indirect employment opportunities across mining, mineral processing, logistics and contractor services.
The company also contributes to local economic development through procurement initiatives and community programmes focused on infrastructure, education and skills training.
Mining continues to play a central role in the economy of KwaZulu-Natal, with RBM contributing valuable export revenue and supporting operations at the Port of Richards Bay. Its supply chain further creates business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, suppliers and service providers.
The visit comes as the South African government intensifies engagement with mining companies to boost investor confidence, improve infrastructure and expand the sector’s contribution to economic growth and job creation.
