DRC–Canada Trade Relations Deepen as Ministers Discuss Investment, Digital Border Systems, Agriculture, and Renewable Energy Cooperation

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Canada have reached a new milestone in strengthening their economic and trade cooperation, signaling renewed momentum in bilateral relations.

This development was highlighted during a meeting between the Congolese Minister of Foreign Trade, Julien Paluku Kahongya, and his Canadian counterpart on the sidelines of the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Discussions focused on several strategic areas aimed at expanding bilateral trade and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Both parties emphasized the importance of increasing trade flows between Congolese and Canadian companies, particularly in the context of economic diversification and greater market openness.

Strengthening private-sector collaboration was identified as a key driver for unlocking new commercial opportunities.

Among the concrete initiatives discussed was the proposed organization of a DRC–Canada Economic Forum.

This platform is expected to create new opportunities for businesses in both countries by facilitating investment, partnerships, and knowledge exchange in high-potential sectors.

The modernization of commercial infrastructure also featured prominently in the talks. Canadian authorities expressed interest in supporting the DRC in the digitalization of border posts an essential reform for improving trade efficiency, enhancing transparency, reducing delays, and increasing government revenue collection.

In addition, both countries agreed to explore long-term partnerships in critical sectors such as agriculture and renewable energy.

These areas are considered strategic priorities for promoting inclusive economic growth, strengthening food security, and supporting the transition toward sustainable energy systems.

As part of efforts to maintain momentum, an invitation was extended to continue discussions in Ottawa, reflecting a shared commitment to transforming diplomatic engagement into tangible economic outcomes.

Through this strengthened partnership, the DRC aims to enhance its economic attractiveness on the global stage while leveraging targeted international collaborations to accelerate national development.
