DRC Hosts BUANYA Excellence Competition to Strengthen Mining Governance Skills Among Future Administrators

DRC Ministry of Mines Awards Winners of BUANYA Competition to Train Future Leaders in Mining Governance

The Ministry of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo held the official award ceremony for the BUANYA Excellence Competition on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at the Pullman Grand Hotel in Kinshasa.

The initiative was launched by the Minister of Mines, Louis Watum Kabamba, to engage students of the National School of Administration (ENA) on key strategic issues in the country’s mining sector.

The ceremony was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Mines, senior officials from institutions under the ministry’s supervision, members of the jury, ENA students, and invited guests. The event marked the presentation of results and awards to participating teams.

Training future leaders in mining governance

The competition brought together 48 ENA graduates, divided into six teams, who worked over several weeks on thematic areas central to the development of the mining sector.

These included mining governance, transparency and traceability of mineral resources, the fight against fraud, regulation of artisanal mining, geological exploration, equitable distribution of mining revenues, and the development of new mining projects.

Organisers said the programme was designed to strengthen analytical capacity and prepare future public administrators to contribute to improved governance in the extractive sector.

Emphasis on transparency and development impact

In his address, Minister Louis Watum Kabamba stated that the Democratic Republic of Congo holds a central position in global energy transition supply chains due to its mineral wealth.

He noted that this strategic position comes with the responsibility to ensure that mineral resources translate into sustainable development outcomes, including job creation, infrastructure development, and improved public services.

He encouraged participants to uphold values of excellence, integrity, and public service, stressing that future mining governance should be based on transparency, innovation, meritocracy, and results-oriented leadership.

Building institutional capacity

The BUANYA competition forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Mines to strengthen national capacity in mining sector governance and policy implementation. The initiative aims to support the development of a new generation of public sector professionals capable of driving reforms in line with the government’s mining sector strategy.

Officials said the programme aligns with the national vision for improved governance of natural resources under the leadership of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi and the coordination of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka.

Through initiatives such as BUANYA, the Ministry of Mines aims to reinforce institutional expertise and promote a more transparent, efficient, and development-oriented mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
