DRC Mines Ministry Reviews ONYO-BT’s Proposed Green Energy Solution for Mining Projects
DRC Mines Ministry Engages ONYO-BT on Innovative Decentralized Green Energy Technology to Support Mining Operations
On Monday, May 25, 2026, the Minister of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Louis Watum Kabamba, received a delegation from the Congolese company ONYO-BT, led by its President and CEO, Bryan Tshibanda.
The meeting focused on the presentation of an innovative energy solution intended to support mining development across the country, particularly in areas affected by limited electricity access.
Energy solution targeting the mining sector
According to a statement from the Ministry of Mines’ communications department, the proposed technology aims to help address persistent electricity shortages affecting both local communities and mining operations in several provinces of the DRC.
Representatives of ONYO-BT explained that their system is based on the transformation of mineral resources into what they describe as “green energy,” designed to operate with minimal environmental impact.
The company also emphasized that the solution is autonomous and can function independently of the national electricity grid.
A key feature highlighted during the presentation is the decentralized nature of the technology, which is intended to enable rapid deployment in remote mining regions where energy infrastructure remains underdeveloped.
Claimed rapid deployment and capacity
At the conclusion of the meeting, Rigain Ngoto, described as the technical assistant to the company’s CEO, stated that ONYO-BT had already developed an autonomous power plant in Kasai Oriental with a reported capacity of 610 megawatts, reportedly completed within 45 days.
The company presents this achievement as evidence of both rapid execution capacity and the scalability of its energy system.
Government response and potential collaboration
Minister Louis Watum Kabamba expressed interest in the initiative, noting the importance of locally developed solutions that could help reduce the energy deficit in the mining sector, a key pillar of the Congolese economy.
He also indicated openness to potential collaboration between the Ministry of Mines, ONYO-BT, and other sector stakeholders, including the Chamber of Mines.
This initiative is said to align with the broader national development vision of President Félix Tshisekedi, coordinated through the government of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, which prioritizes expanding energy access to support industrial growth and attract mining investment.
According to the Ministry, discussions also touched on potential energy supply solutions for the Kabeya Kamwanga copper project in Kasai Oriental, as well as a proposed iron ore mining project in the broader eastern region of the country.
The talks signal early-stage engagement on integrating decentralized energy systems into strategic mining developments in the DRC.
