DR Congo Advances US$2 Billion Manono Lithium Project to Boost Local Processing and Jobs

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is accelerating the development of the US$2 billion Manono lithium project in Tanganyika Province as the government pushes to strengthen local mineral processing, infrastructure development, and job creation in the country’s growing battery minerals sector.

Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba met with officials from MANONO LITHIUM SAS on Thursday, May 7, 2026, for a working session focused on the progress and implementation of the strategic lithium project.

During the meeting, company executives briefed the minister on key milestones already achieved, as well as challenges affecting the execution of the project, which is being developed through a partnership involving Zijin Mining Group, COMINIÈRE SA, and the Congolese government.

Discussions centered on the phased commissioning of major infrastructure projects scheduled for 2026, including a dense-media separation plant, a smelting system, road infrastructure, and upgrades to the Port of Kalemie.

The facilities are expected to significantly improve mining operations and commercial logistics in the region.

The minister also welcomed progress on the 37.5MW Mpiana-Mwanga hydroelectric power plant, alongside broader investments in energy, transport, port, and industrial infrastructure aimed at supporting the development of a local lithium and tin value chain.

Mr Watum Kabamba praised the project’s industrial vision and encouraged MANONO LITHIUM SAS to intensify efforts toward local mineral processing, technology transfer, and employment creation for Congolese citizens.

According to company officials, the project currently employs more than 1,200 Congolese workers and supports thousands of indirect jobs through related economic activities.

The minister further stressed the importance of strengthening engagement with local communities and maintaining close coordination with provincial and national authorities.

He also urged the company to provide regular quarterly progress reports and begin long-term planning for post-mining activities as part of a broader sustainable development strategy.

The Manono lithium project is regarded as one of Africa’s most significant lithium developments and forms part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s broader ambition to position itself as a major global supplier of minerals critical to electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy technologies, and the global energy transition.
