ZAMBIAN MINISTER OF GREEN ECONOMY AND ENVIRONMENT PRAISES KANSANSHI FOR ITS SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY SCHEME

SOLWEZI, ZAMBIA – Minister of Green Economy and Environment Collins Nzovu has praised Kansanshi Mining PLC management for establishing a sustainable and environment-friendly management system.

Mr Nzovu hailed the First Quantum Minerals Limited (FQM) subsidiary company for its environmental compliance when he toured the operations at the mine in Solwezi on Thursday.

He said he was happy that Kansanshi Mining PLC maintained the environmental compliance as demanded by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).

“We are very happy to see various controls which include wastewater re-use, no pollution to the environment, and natural resources preservation to avoid the endangerment of ecosystems,” said the Minister.

The Minister said Government was eager to support and partner with Kansanshi Mining PLC management in implementing strategies for efficient, environment-friendly, and climate-friendly development.

He noted that the controls put in at the giant copper mine would mitigate significant environmental problems leading to the improvement of resource efficiency in industrial production.

“Kansanshi is doing quite a lot in terms of wastewater recycling, resource efficiency, carbon reduction, and forest maintenance,” said the Minister.

Mr Nzovu advised other mines in the country to emulate Kansanshi Mine in providing technical solutions and management capability designed to improve the environmental conditions for the benefit of the community.

And ZEMA Northern Region Manager Chrispin Simwanza encouraged Kansanshi Mining PLC management to continue being compliant with the regulations on environmental management.

Mr Simwanza happily confirmed that Kansanshi Mine had sustained zero discharge of tailings and effluent to the environment because of its automated monitoring system.
