Virtus Minerals Reports 4,000 Jobs and Strong Local Contractor Participation at DRC’s Mutoshi-Étoile Project

Virtus Minerals Reports Over 4,000 Jobs and 81 Contractors as Mutoshi-Étoile Project Nears Key Milestones in DRC

The redevelopment of the Mutoshi-Étoile copper and cobalt project in the Democratic Republic of Congo is gaining momentum, with operator Virtus Minerals reporting significant progress on construction, employment creation and community development initiatives.

During a recent meeting with DRC Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba, company representatives provided an update on the former Chemaf assets, which were acquired by the U.S.-based mining firm earlier this year.

The discussions focused on project development, economic impact and preparations for future operations.

According to Virtus Minerals, the project has already generated more than 2,000 direct jobs and nearly 2,000 indirect jobs, making it one of the more significant employment-generating mining investments currently under development in the country’s copper belt. The company also reported that 81 subcontractors are actively involved in project activities, highlighting the growing participation of local businesses within the supply chain.

At the Makala site, Virtus Minerals has outlined plans to support approximately 8,500 artisanal miners during the transition period.

The programme is expected to include financial inclusion initiatives and housing-related support measures aimed at helping affected communities adapt to changes associated with the project’s development.

Construction activities continue at the Étoile site, with overall project completion targeted for December 2026.

The company says ongoing works are progressing in line with its development objectives as it moves toward full operational readiness.

Beyond mining operations, Virtus Minerals has also committed to investing in local skills development through the rehabilitation of the Mutoshi Technical School.

The initiative is expected to improve vocational training opportunities and support the development of a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the region’s growing mining industry.

The Mutoshi-Étoile project forms part of a broader effort to revive former Chemaf assets following Virtus Minerals’ acquisition of the company in March 2026.

The transaction marked the beginning of a major investment programme aimed at restarting and expanding copper and cobalt production in the DRC, two commodities that remain central to the global energy transition.

Government officials have welcomed the project’s progress, viewing it as an important contributor to employment, local enterprise development and the continued growth of the country’s mining sector.

Minister Watum reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting strategic mining investments while ensuring compliance with national laws and regulations.

As construction advances and preparations continue for future production, the Mutoshi-Étoile project is positioning itself as a key contributor to the DRC’s copper and cobalt industry while delivering broader economic benefits through job creation, contractor participation and community development.
