Copper production in the Democratic Republic of Congo could reach 2.3 million tons per year against production estimated at 1.5 million tons currently.

This Projection was delivered by Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, on Tuesday May 10, 2022, in Cape Town in South Africa during the International Forum on mines called “Mining Indaba”.

The Congolese Head of Government hailed the “positive” development of mining production in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the past few years.

Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde noted in particular the increase in copper mining production capacity by 276% for the period between 2010 and 2020.

According to the Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, the production capacity of copper in the DRC has increased from 435,000 tons to around 1.7 million tons currently and could reach 2.3 million tons in 2024. And this, despite the slowdown in economic activities around the world, due to the collateral effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Congolese Head of Government, the production of raw materials in the DRC has recorded a substantial increase over the past ten years, citing in particular the case of gold, which has experienced a boost thanks to the revival of mining. industrial.

The Congolese Head of Government, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, estimates the volume of gold production in 2021 at 31 tonnes exported from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Regarding diamond exports, the major destinations were the United Arab Emirates, with more than 60% of the global volume, followed by Belgium and India.

It should be noted that the Democratic Republic of Congo has also improved the quality of its exports of refined copper, with around 80% of this product.
