Over 2.5 million tonnes of Copper Produced in DRC during 2022

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) produced during the year 2022 a volume of 2.5 million tons of copper.

This is what emerges from the report of the Ministry of Mines which presents the general situation of the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to the same source, copper production in the country was estimated at around 1.7 million tonnes in previous years.

This copper production has indeed experienced a marked increase in 2022.

Regarding exports, the Ministry of Mines notes that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) exported 2.3 million tonnes of copper in 2022 against 1.7 million tonnes for 2021.

During his visit, in May of the year 2022, to Cape Town in South Africa during the International Forum on mines called “Mining Indaba”, the Congolese Prime Minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, had indicated that the production of copper in the DRC is expected to reach the threshold of 2.3 million tonnes by 2024.

Moreover, this production did not wait until 2024 to reach 2.5 million tonnes in one calendar year.

The Congolese Head of Government had welcomed the “positive” evolution of mining production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for several years.

According to Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, between 2010 and 2020, the country recorded an increase in copper mining production capacity of 276%.

Copper production capacity in the DRC has increased from 435,000 tonnes in 2021 to approximately 1.7 million tonnes in 2021.
