Japan Grants USD 300,000 to Rehabilitate Maréchal Bridge in Matadi, DRC

The Government of Japan has approved the cost of the rehabilitation works of the Maréchal bridge in Matadi in the province of Kongo Central, the cost of which is estimated at 40 million Japanese Yen, equivalent to nearly 300,000 USD.

The announcement was made by the Ambassador of Japan to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Minami Hiro, during an exchange, Thursday, May 25, 2023, with the Minister of Transport.

According to the Japanese Ambassador to the DRC, the signing of the exchange of notes to record the start of work in 2024 will take place between Wednesday June 21 and Friday June 23, 2023.

The Minister of Transport, Ways of Communication, and Accessibility, Marc Ekila, expressed his satisfaction with the successful outcome of this project, which will benefit the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He commended Japan’s commitment, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), for their continued partnership in the development of the DRC.

Remember that the Matadi bridge (formerly Maréchal bridge) is a suspension bridge located in Matadi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

It crosses the Congo River and connects the city of Matadi to that of Boma by road, about fifty kilometers downstream of the river. This rehabilitation work on the Maréchal bridge comes forty years after its inauguration
