CNPAV takes legal action against EGAL, CCC and Gécamines for alleged acts of corruption

The Coalition Congo is not for Sale (CNPAV) lodged three complaints at the Office of the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa on Friday, December 8, 2023. These complaints detail allegations of corruption, money laundering, and the misappropriation of public funds.

During a press conference held at the Memling hotel in Kinshasa on the same day, CNPAV specified the contents of the files. They cited cases involving political figures from both current and previous regimes, along with their relatives, accusing them of embezzling millions of dollars from the public treasury through companies such as EGAL and Congo Construction Company.

Additionally, they highlighted a claim that over $400 million in tax advances paid by Gécamines to Central Bank accounts didn’t reach the public treasury. Instead, part of this sum allegedly financed businesses associated with the former President’s family.

The first complaint focuses on EGAL, an agri-food company. CNPAV asserted that EGAL received approximately $43 million in public funds directly from the Central Bank of Congo through the commercial bank BGFI.

Although BGFI committed to refund this amount after an investigation by the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF), CNPAV noted that those responsible for the misappropriation have not faced consequences.

The second complaint revolves around the Congo Construction Company (CCC) and is grounded in the Congo Hold-up investigations.

According to CNPAV, CCC received $65 million between 2012 and 2018 through its accounts at BGFI from various companies, including Sino-Congolaise des Mines (Sicomines), and the Congo road management company (SGR).
