Ministry of Mines in partnership with the DCAF to ensure respect for rights and security in the extractive sector- DRC
The Minister of Mines, Willy KITOBO SAMSONI, and his Human Rights colleague, André LITE, carried out an official mission in early October 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland to the Center for the Governance of the Security Sector (DCAF), reports a dispatch from the ministry of mines. In Geneva, the two members of the government discussed with DCAF officials with a view of benefiting from its support in the process of adhering to the Voluntary Principles of respect for rights and security in the extractive sector.
On this occasion, the two ministers of the DRC enlightened the leaders of this Center on the efforts undertaken by the Congolese government to responsibly exploit minerals, without using children and vulnerable people in mining.
DCAF has pledged to support the Congolese government in everything it does to follow the international recommendations of the Voluntary Principles required in the extractive sector.
These Voluntary Principles are based on the following 3 pillars: Government, Businesses and Civil Society. It was recommended that the multi-stakeholder dialogue be permanent and that an inventory and a roadmap be quickly validated for a good implementation of the Voluntary Principles on security and human rights in the DRC.
The session ended with a souvenir photo as part of this new DCAF – DRC Government partnership represented by the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Human Rights.
The Center for Security Sector Governance is an international foundation whose mission is to help the international community apply the principles of good governance and implement security sector reform. To this end, the center draws up the appropriate international or national standards, ensures their promotion, defines good practices as well as relevant recommendations which will make it possible to put in place effective governance of the security sector. In the field, it provides support by giving its advisory opinion and offers technical assistance programs to all interested parties. “
