Certification Boosts Transparency in Congolese Artisanal Mining

The Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Federation of Congolese Companies (FEC), has completed a six-month training program for two Congolese auditors on artisanal and small-scale mining.

The accreditations were awarded to the beneficiaries on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in Kinshasa.

Louis Watum, President of the Chamber of Mines within the FEC, emphasized the rigorous training undergone by the auditors, aimed at enhancing the certification process for artisanal mining activities, particularly in cobalt, copper, and the 3Ts (tin, tantalum, and tungsten).

The auditors are tasked with certifying mining sites to ensure compliance with standards, thereby promoting clarity and transparency throughout the artisanal mining chain.

The accredited auditors expressed gratitude to the Congolese government and German cooperation for their training, recognizing the importance of responsible mineral supply chains.

Aristide Baguma, an independent auditor, highlighted the significance of the certification process for various mining sectors in the DRC.

John Nkono, Secretary-General of the FEC, stressed the need to combat exploitation in mining sites to improve the image of Congolese mines and ensure acceptance of their products in international markets.

He underscored the importance of meeting ethical standards to prevent boycotts and promote ethical sourcing practices.

Michel Mauritz, BGR-DRC Project Manager, acknowledged the support of the FEC in the accreditation process, marking the culmination of extensive collaborative efforts.

The project, funded by the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources, aims to strengthen the Ministry of Mines in the DRC in qualifying and validating mining sites.
