Zambian Govt to Implement Measures to Tackle Power Crisis
The Zambian government is introducing several interventions to address the current power crisis, according to Energy Minister Peter Kapala. These measures include the importation of diesel-powered generators and the expansion of Maamba Collieries.
Minister Kapala expressed concern over the ongoing load shedding, which has been caused by reduced water levels at hydroelectric power stations.
He made these remarks during a tour of the Kafue Gorge and Kariba North Power Stations alongside Water and Sanitation Minister Mike Mposha.
Kapala announced that the increased load shedding schedule will be reviewed in October with the hope of reducing the hours of power cuts.
Kariba North Bank Senior Power Station Manager Cephas Museba warned that the power station risks complete shutdown if it continues generating at the current capacity.
Meanwhile, Water and Sanitation Minister Mposha called for the prudent use of water from the Kafue River. He urged entities like farmers who abstract water from the river to adopt drip irrigation systems, which require less water.
