ZAMZINC Achieves $10 Million Investment Milestone in Lusaka Manganese Plant

ZAMZINC Industry Company Limited, registered with the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) in 2021, has already realized over $10 million of its committed $50 million investment in a manganese processing plant in Lusaka.

The plant, located in the Lusaka Multi-Facility Economic Zone (LS-MFEZ), currently produces 200 tonnes of manganese daily, with plans to increase production to 300 tonnes per day.

During a visit by a ZDA team, ZAMZINC General Manager Mavis Chintu reported that production is progressing smoothly. The plant operates 24 hours a day in three shifts and employs 250 contractual workers, including 50 women. Additionally, 100 workers are employed at the coal off-loading bay.

“We have 250 contractual employees, of whom 50 are women, and the rest are men. We only have six expatriates,” Ms. Chintu said.

She also mentioned that ZAMZINC sources coal from local suppliers in Zambia and imports the shortfall. The construction and setup of the plant took two years, and it has passed inspections by various licensing authorities.

“We are pleased to be fully operational now. All relevant licensing authorities have inspected the plant and given us the go-ahead,” she added.

During the same visit, ZDA Head of Communications and Public Relations, Kwali Mfuni, noted that ZAMZINC acquired its investment license in 2021 and has since benefited from various tax and non-tax incentives as outlined in the Investment, Trade and Business Development Act of 2022. This act defines the mandate and functions of the ZDA.

Ms. Mfuni stated that the visit aimed to assess the company’s investment realization, job creation, and the business opportunities it provides to Zambians.
