DRC Minister of Mines Highlights Nation’s Mining Ambitions at Inaugural Mining & Energy House Event

The Makutano Network 2024 Economic Forum, held in Kinshasa, served as a pivotal platform for advancing inclusive and sustainable growth strategies in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the broader Central African region.

Bringing together prominent leaders in innovation and development, the forum underscored a vision for Africa’s economic prosperity built on sound policies and responsible partnerships.

At the Mining & Energy House, the event commenced with an inaugural speech by the DRC’s Minister of Mines, Kizito Pakabomba.

The Minister emphasized the country’s ambition to leverage its vast mineral wealth to drive economic transformation. He was joined by influential figures, including:

  • Marie-Chantal Kaninda, President and CEO of Glencore and CEO of Kamoto Copper Company S.A.
  • Nicolas Treand, CEO of Eurasian Resources Group Africa (ERG).
  • Placide Nkala, CEO of Gécamines S.A.
  • Paul Mabiola, CEO of Cadastre Minier (CAMI RDC).
  • Dinah McLeod, CEO of the Cobalt Institute.

Amid discussions on the global energy transition, the Minister highlighted the DRC’s critical role as the world’s leading producer of cobalt, a cornerstone metal for green technologies and battery production.

He outlined plans to modernize the mining sector to meet international sustainability standards and growing global demand while ensuring the protection of local ecosystems and communities.

The issue of mineral traceability also took center stage, with the Minister stressing its ethical and environmental importance. Enhanced traceability measures align with the DRC’s international commitments to human rights and environmental protection while boosting the country’s appeal to responsible investors.

The forum showcased the DRC’s potential to shape a greener and more equitable future for Africa by fostering sustainable resource management and innovative economic strategies.
