Mkushi Chiefs Praise Kansanshi Mine’s Sustainable Mining Model

Traditional leaders from Mkushi’s Chief Chitina, alongside representatives from Mimosa Resources, have applauded First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi for its commitment to sustainable mining practices.

The delegation visited Kansanshi Mine as part of Mimosa Resources’ stakeholder engagement efforts for the Kashime Copper Project. This initiative seeks to integrate economic growth with environmental stewardship and social responsibility

Mimosa Resources Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Dr. Ian Nzali Banda, highlighted the partnership with FQM, emphasizing Kansanshi Mine’s cutting-edge approaches to water recycling and its 4,000-hectare game sanctuary as benchmarks for sustainable operations

Chief Chitina praised Kansanshi’s proactive efforts, including wildlife conservation and tree-planting programs, as evidence of harmonious coexistence between mining and nature.

He expressed enthusiasm for implementing similar initiatives in Mkushi to drive local economic and environmental progress.

FQM’s Kansanshi Mining Agriculture and Wildlife Coordinator, Dr. Jackson Katampi, addressed environmental concerns by outlining robust biodiversity conservation efforts and stringent air and water quality monitoring systems. These measures reinforced confidence in the mine’s commitment to sustainability.

This exchange of knowledge and best practices signals a step forward in aligning Zambia’s mining sector with global sustainability standards.
