DRC Journalists Trained on Mining Taxation to Enhance Transparency
Journalists in the Democratic Republic of Congo have gained valuable insights into mining taxation, equipping them to advocate for transparent management in the sector.
This training, organized by the Oisillons Groupe Association with support from the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) under the DISMII project (Maximizing Revenues from the Mining Sector), aims to strengthen journalists’ ability to monitor and influence the mining sector’s revenue management.
According to the association’s coordinator, the training’s goal is to empower journalists to play a more significant role in overseeing mining revenues and ensuring transparency.
Expert facilitator Mponge Descartes emphasized the mining sector’s critical role in the Congolese economy, stating, “The mining sector is essential for the national economy, supporting the state budget, stabilizing the currency, and significantly contributing to the GDP.” He also pointed out its broader impact on society, security, and geopolitics.
Socially, the mining sector generates employment and supports the construction of key infrastructure like schools, roads, and hospitals.
In terms of security, it helps fund the military and professionalize security forces. Geostrategically, it enhances the country’s diplomatic and commercial standing, allowing it to engage in international markets.
Despite its importance, the sector faces significant challenges that hinder the country from fully benefiting from its mining exports.
The call to action for media professionals is to actively contribute to maximizing state revenues from mining to address these challenges and ensure long-term benefits for the country and its citizens.
