DRC Prime Minister Highlights Lobito Corridor’s Role in Economic Transformation at KBM 2025
The sixth edition of the Katanga Business Meeting (KBM), held under the theme “Building Our Future: Focus on Priority Objectives,” opened on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in Kolwezi.
The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, who underscored the strategic significance of the Lobito Corridor for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In her opening address, Prime Minister Suminwa emphasized that the corridor represented more than just a transportation route—it stood as a dynamic symbol of regional integration.
“This is a new opportunity to attract structural investments and promote local processing of strategic minerals such as copper, cobalt, and lithium,” she stated.
“It also allows us to envision a Democratic Republic of Congo that exports finished products.”
She outlined several critical factors necessary for transforming the Congolese economy, including the promotion of public-private partnerships, the formation of strategic alliances, skill sharing, and accelerating the execution of large-scale projects to ensure sustainable development.
Referring back to the event’s central theme, Suminwa expressed her belief that building the nation’s future required not only a sense of responsibility but also a renewed sense of confidence in the country’s ability to progress. She stressed that achieving this vision would demand strong governmental commitment.
“The government is dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to investment, protecting the rights of local communities, and ensuring transparency in the management of our natural resources,” she affirmed.
As the first woman to lead a government in the DRC, Prime Minister Suminwa also acknowledged the critical role of women in national development. She praised their resilience and active involvement in shaping the future of the country.
“Women in the DRC are entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders,” she noted. “They are making significant contributions in sectors like mining, technology, industry, agribusiness, and politics. As head of the Congolese executive, I am committed to promoting strong and inclusive female leadership.”
The first day of KBM 2025 concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially launch the program. Participants prepared for two intensive days of discussions focused on shaping a prosperous and inclusive future for the DRC.
