FQM Kansanshi Develops New Grievance Management Procedure to Boost Transparency and Community Trust

First Quantum’s Kansanshi Mine Launches Public Process to Create Inclusive Grievance Mechanism in Zambia

First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) Kansanshi Mining PLC has launched a public consultative process to develop a new Grievance Management Procedure, aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and community engagement.

The initiative seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for receiving, assessing, and resolving concerns from both internal and external stakeholders in a transparent, fair, and timely manner, with active community participation.

North-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Luckson Mulumbi, praised Kansanshi Mining PLC for taking a proactive step toward addressing community concerns, particularly those related to mining operations in Solwezi.

“Given the many issues raised by communities in Solwezi, the development of this procedure has come at the right time. Once implemented, it will allow stakeholders to engage Kansanshi Mining PLC on matters that affect them,” Mulumbi said.

The Government of Zambia, through ZCCM-IH, holds a 20% stake in Kansanshi Mining PLC. Mulumbi stressed that the grievance procedure should go beyond regulatory compliance and serve as a trust-building tool that strengthens stakeholder relations.

FQM Country Manager, Dr. Godwin Beene, reaffirmed the company’s belief that “what is good for the community is also good for business.”

“This procedure will strengthen how we address and respond to concerns, ensuring transparency and fairness,” Beene said, adding that it would be culturally appropriate, free of charge, and accessible to all community members.

The workshop, attended by traditional leaders, community representatives, and other stakeholders, marks a critical stage in designing a grievance system tailored to local needs.

Kansanshi Mining PLC operates the Kansanshi mine and smelter in Solwezi, while FQM also runs the Sentinel copper mine and Enterprise nickel mine in Kalumbila. In 2024, FQM’s global output included 431,000 tonnes of copper, 139,000 ounces of gold, and 24,000 tonnes of nickel.

The new grievance mechanism is expected to become a cornerstone of the company’s sustainability strategy, aligning with its goal of fostering mutual trust and long-term cooperation with host communities.
