ZEMA Cracks Down on Illegal Mining Along Kafue River in Zambia

ZEMA Warns Illegal Miners in Chingola and Chililabombwe Over Kafue River Environmental Threats

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has issued a strong warning to illegal miners operating along the Kafue River in Chingola and Chililabombwe districts, ordering them to halt all unauthorized activities with immediate effect.

The directive follows an inspection in the Hippo Pool area, which uncovered serious environmental damage linked to unlawful mining. ZEMA’s findings revealed increased water turbidity, disruption of natural river flow, and potential threats to water quality.

“These activities are not only unlawful but also place the ecosystem and biodiversity at grave risk,” said Ruth Kanyanga Kamwi, ZEMA’s Manager of Corporate Affairs. She highlighted habitat destruction, soil erosion, and pollution of water sources as key dangers posed by illegal mining operations.

ZEMA has called on local communities and stakeholders to report any future incidents of illegal mining. The agency also warned that those who fail to comply with environmental regulations will face swift punitive action, including fines and prosecution.

“ZEMA remains committed to safeguarding Zambia’s natural resources,” Ms. Kamwi emphasized. “We will continue collaborating with communities, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to hold accountable those who degrade the environment.”

The Kafue River is one of Zambia’s most important water sources, supporting households, agriculture, and wildlife. Authorities caution that continued unlawful mining could severely undermine livelihoods and long-term ecological sustainability in the region.
