Zambia and Zimbabwe Strengthen Energy Cooperation in High-Level Kariba Dam Talks
Zambia, Zimbabwe Agree on Increased Kariba Water Allocation and Joint Energy Collaboration
Zambia and Zimbabwe have held a high-level joint ministerial meeting on energy in Harare, focusing on water usage at Kariba Dam and broader strategies to address the power challenges facing both nations.
The meeting brought together Hon. Makozo Chikote, Zambia’s Minister of Energy, and Hon. July Moyo, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, along with senior representatives from ZESCO Limited, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), and the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA).
Agreement on Water Allocation and Energy Cooperation
During the discussions, Minister Chikote requested an increase in the 2025 water allocation for the Kariba North Bank Power Station (KNBPS) after Zambia’s initial 14 billion cubic metres quota was fully utilised.
Following deliberations, both ministers agreed to allow controlled over-utilisation of water by ZESCO and ZPC, provided the utilities adhere to the established operational and environmental guidelines set by the ZRA.
Private Sector and Alternative Energy Emphasised
Minister Moyo highlighted the critical role of the private sector in diversifying the region’s energy mix and reducing dependence on hydroelectric generation.
“Investments in fossil fuels, solar, and gas are vital to meet growing demand and strengthen energy security,” Moyo said, commending Zambia’s Mamba Energy Project as a successful model for driving industrial growth through alternative energy sources.
Shared Vision for Sustainable Development
Both ministers reaffirmed the long-standing cooperation between Zambia and Zimbabwe, describing the Zambezi River as a shared strategic resource vital to the region’s energy stability and development.
The talks also explored joint infrastructure development and fuel transportation as priority areas for continued collaboration, aimed at enhancing regional energy integration and economic resilience.
Commitment to Regional Energy Stability
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both countries to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation and promote sustainable management of shared natural resources.
“Zambia and Zimbabwe remain united in our vision for energy security, regional integration, and mutual growth,” the ministers said in a joint statement.
