DRC Minister of Mines Highlights Mining Sector Progress at Glencore 2025 Conference
DRC Mining Minister Louis Watum Kabamba Praises Glencore’s Investments, Highlights $40 Billion in Sector Growth
The National Minister of Mines, His Excellency Mr. Louis Watum Kabamba, joined Prime Minister Her Excellency Mrs. Judith Suminwa at the annual Glencore DRC 2025 conference.
Held under the theme “Securing the Future: From Global Standards to Local Impact,” the conference brought together government officials, private sector representatives, and international partners to discuss sustainability, governance, and local impact in the mining sector.
In his keynote address, Minister Kabamba commended Glencore for its continued presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2007 and its significant contributions through its KCC and MUMI mining operations in Lualaba Province. He highlighted the company’s substantial investments in the responsible production of copper and cobalt.
The Minister emphasized the importance of attracting additional capital and advanced technology, ensuring equitable distribution of mining benefits, and conducting business in compliance with national laws and obligations.
He also spotlighted the progress made in mining sector governance, which has helped attract nearly USD 40 billion in investments to date. These improvements have been recognized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which approved a USD 3 billion support package for the DRC.
Responding to questions from attendees, Minister Kabamba outlined initiatives to strengthen post-mining investments and highlighted the reciprocal responsibilities of both the government and investors.
The Minister’s participation underscores the government’s commitment, under Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, to positioning the mining sector as a driver of sustainable and inclusive growth that contributes directly to national development.
