KCM and FNB Partner to Provide Solar Energy Solutions for Employees

KCM and FNB Sign MOU to Supply Solar Kits to Employees Amid Zambia’s Energy Crisis

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and First National Bank (FNB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide solar energy kits to KCM employees, in a move aimed at easing the impact of the ongoing national energy crisis on households.

Beyond improving access to reliable electricity for employees, the initiative is also designed to empower local technicians and installers by creating opportunities for skills development and small business growth within surrounding communities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at KCM’s corporate offices in Chingola, Acting Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Mewett commended FNB for partnering on the initiative.

He noted that the collaboration goes beyond offering discounted solar panels, generating broader social and economic benefits for local communities.

“As a mining company, our core objective is to produce copper and contribute to the national target of three million metric tonnes by 2031, while also supporting our employees through access to solar energy solutions,” Mr. Mewett said.

He underscored the project’s social impact, particularly for families, adding that reliable electricity will help improve the quality of life for employees and their households.

He highlighted the importance of enabling children to study at night and described the partnership as one that will deliver lasting benefits to the wider community.

FNB Retail Director Mwamba Musambo described the agreement as a purpose-driven partnership that extends beyond the provision of solar equipment.

“Our bank is committed to offering free financial guidance to KCM employees participating in the programme,” she said, adding that the initiative represents a potentially life-changing opportunity for staff and their families.

The partnership reflects a growing focus on sustainable energy solutions and collaborative approaches to addressing power challenges in Zambia.
