Zambia Breaks Ground on Siavonga 100MW Solar Project to Boost Energy Security

Zambia Launches $80m Siavonga 100MW Solar PV Project to Strengthen National Power Supply

Zambia has taken a major step toward strengthening national energy security with the groundbreaking of the $80-million Siavonga 100-megawatt Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, a landmark renewable energy development aimed at enhancing electricity supply and system resilience.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Energy, Permanent Secretary – Electricity, Engineer Arnold Simwaba, said the project reflects the Government’s commitment to translating energy policy into bankable investments that diversify the country’s power mix, mitigate climate-related risks, and support sustained economic growth.

“Solar energy is becoming increasingly strategic as Zambia continues to face hydrological challenges that affect hydropower generation,” Simwaba said. “Projects such as the Siavonga Solar PV Plant strengthen our power system’s ability to withstand climate shocks while meeting growing demand from households, businesses, and industry.”

He also commended traditional leaders in Siavonga for their proactive support in availing land for the project, noting that their cooperation has enabled timely implementation and reinforced Zambia’s reputation as a stable, investor-friendly destination.

The 100MW solar facility will be developed by JIGSCO Energy Corporation Limited, a joint venture between ZESCO Limited and Jigsaw Investments, with Power China appointed as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor.

Once operational by December 2026, the plant is expected to add significant capacity to the national grid, stabilise electricity supply, and support Siavonga’s transition from hydropower dependence toward a more diversified solar-based energy mix.

Aligned with Zambia’s Integrated Resource Plan and the 2019 National Energy Policy, the project is anticipated to contribute to ending load shedding while delivering broader socio-economic benefits, including job creation, skills transfer, and sustainable local economic development.
