Congolese Geology Team Wins Global Recognition at PDAC 2026

DRC’s Bana Kongo Researchers Win Award at PDAC 2026, Highlighting Congolese Talent in Mining Exploration

A team of young Congolese researchers has earned international recognition at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada Convention 2026 in Toronto, highlighting the growing role of local talent in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining sector.

During his official visit to Toronto, Mines Minister Louis Watum Kabamba met with the group, known as Bana Kongo, to discuss ways of strengthening the participation of Congolese researchers in major mining and geological exploration projects.

The Bana Kongo team, composed of researchers from the University of Kinshasa, distinguished itself at the Next Generation Explorers Award (NGEA) 2026, a scientific competition held alongside the world’s largest mining convention.

Competing against around 40 teams from various countries, the Congolese geologists delivered an impressive performance. As the only African team selected for the competition, they successfully generated robust mineral exploration targets using integrated geological and exploration data.

The team finished among the six finalists and secured the Impact and Exploration Award, marking the second-best overall performance in the competition. The achievement underscores the quality and potential of Congolese geological research on the global stage.

During the meeting, Kabamba congratulated the researchers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting national talent in the mining sector.

He emphasized that the government aims to ensure Congolese experts play a greater role in developing the country’s vast mineral resources, particularly in geological research and exploration.

Kabamba also reiterated the government’s broader objective of ensuring that the Democratic Republic of Congo’s natural resources deliver tangible benefits for its citizens.

The approach aligns with the vision of President Félix Tshisekedi and is being implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Judith Suminwa.

The recognition of the Bana Kongo team at PDAC 2026 highlights the emergence of a new generation of Congolese scientists and researchers who could play a key role in shaping the future of the country’s mining industry.
