US Embassy Denies Funding Mine Security Unit in DRC Amid Conflicting Statements

US Embassy in Kinshasa Rejects Claims of Funding $100M Mine Patrol Unit in DR Congo as Mining Authority Clarifies Financing Plans

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the United States Embassy in Kinshasa denied reports that it is currently funding a mine patrol or security unit in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The clarification comes after an announcement earlier in the week by the General Inspectorate of Mines (IGM), which stated that mine security agents would be deployed in the coming days to mining sites across the country.

The IGM had linked the initiative to a projected investment of around 100 million US dollars, attributed to a strategic partnership involving the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The U.S. Embassy emphasized that while it remains committed to promoting shared economic growth, stability, and prosperity through its strategic engagement with the DRC, it is not financing any mine patrol or guard deployment.

According to the embassy, the existing partnership agreement is intended to encourage American investment in the DRC, particularly in the mining sector, rather than to fund security operations.

Following the embassy’s denial, the General Inspectorate of Mines issued a further statement on Tuesday.

It clarified that the planned deployment of mine security personnel will not be financed by any single state.

Instead, the initiative will rely on “diversified arrangements involving different types of actors.”

The IGM added that discussions are ongoing to establish a structured system aligned with national priorities, and that further communication will be issued as the framework is finalized.
