Zambia Expands Renewable Energy Capacity with 100MW Chisamba II Solar Plant
Zambia Doubles Chisamba Solar Capacity to 200MW to Support Mining and Energy Security
Zambia has commissioned the 100MW Chisamba II Solar Power Plant, doubling the capacity of the Chisamba Solar Complex to 200MW as the country strengthens its renewable energy capacity and improves electricity security.
Developed by power utility ZESCO, the project was financed through a US$71.5 million loan from Stanbic Bank Zambia and supported by a 13-year power purchase agreement with regional energy trader GreenCo.
The solar plant was constructed by PowerChina and forms part of Zambia’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on hydropower, which has faced pressure from drought-related electricity shortages.
Power generated from the facility will be supplied to copper producer First Quantum Minerals through GreenCo’s power trading arrangements, helping provide renewable energy to mining operations while freeing up electricity capacity for other consumers.
Located in Chisamba District, Central Province, the project increases Zambia’s installed solar capacity and supports the country’s ambition to develop a more resilient and sustainable energy sector.
The commissioning of Chisamba II marks another step in Zambia’s transition toward cleaner energy while ensuring reliable power supply for key industries, businesses, and communities.
