Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Drill and Blast Engineer
Role Summary
Reporting to the Drill and Blast Coordinator, you will be responsible for providing mine planning, drill and blast, support mining operations and mentoring of graduate mining engineers.
Your duties will include but not limited to the following:
Responsibilities
- Provide reports on actual production, drill meters and conduct reconciliations
- Produce post blast analysis reports, provide tie up plans to Drill and Blast operations/ monitor explosive usage, fragmentation, and powder factors.
- Ensure dig plans and drill plans are produced for Operations handover meeting with sufficient information
- Ensure production geology has sufficient information to produce ore crusher feed plan schedules for operations handover meeting with sufficient special projects as required
- Conduct monthly and weekly dump audits
- Conduct pit tours, pre commitment and commitment meetings for weekly planning requirements
- Act as liaison to supporting contractors Maxam, AEL & Avantech (or other contactors) for all technical matters
- Ensure that environmental policies and strategies are incorporated into mining plans
- Identify risks in the work area and use of the correct controls.
Experience & Qualifications
- Grade 12 Certificate
- B.Sc. in Mining Engineering
- Minimum 2 years Mining engineering experience
- Experience in large multi pit operations utilizing large-scale mining equipment i.e. drill rigs and blasting experience essential.
- Valid driver’s license
- Must have good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications.
- Prior exposure to Mine Planning, Design, Production/Drill and blast engineering preferable.
- Prior use or and understanding of mine design software preferably Vulcan but not essential.
- Holder of a Zambian Blasting licence.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia
