HH COMMISSIONS MANGANESE MINE IN ZAMBIA

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has commissioned the Luongo Manganese Mine in Chipili District of Luapula Province. Luongo Manganese Mine has over 40 million tonnes of ore and is projected to last for 20 years. The mine has been developed by Mineral Geologist SIXTUS MULENGA through his exploration company MUSAMU Resources. Speaking when he commissioned the mine, President HICHILEMA said the development of Luongo Manganese Mine is a milestone as it has shown that Zambians can set up and run mines in the country. President HICHILEMA said government will support the mine… Read More Here

Greening global economy brings dependence on critical minerals

After nearly a century of geopolitical tension over access to oil, experts worry that the global transition to clean energy is creating new dependencies on the critical minerals needed for solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicle batteries. ADVERTISING Control over most of these essential elements is concentrated in a handful of countries, none more than China, they note. Which metals are key for the energy transition? Cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium are critical to making electric vehicle batteries. Rare earths such as neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium are used in… Read More Here

Climate transition: After oil, a new dependence on strategic metals?

After a century of geopolitical tensions around access to oil, experts fear that the energy transition will create, especially in Europe, new dependencies on countries that produce metals crucial for low-carbon technologies and energy. electrification of the planet. 1 – What are the climate transition metals? Cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium conduct electricity in car batteries. Rare earths (neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, etc.) are used in hard disks or permanent magnets for wind turbines. Copper and aluminum generally conduct electricity. Platinum is used for hydrogen.   These metals allow industry, electronics, transport or energy systems… Read More Here

HAS GLENCORE GIVEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES THE EXTRA PUSH TO ENGINEER COBALT OUT OF A BATTERY?

Is cobalt becoming its own worst enemy? Simon Moores, Managing Director, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence explores Glencore’s latest move to pull hydroxide supply from the market in the midst of contract negotiating season and what it means for cobalt’s strained relationship with cathode, battery and electric vehicle (EV) producers. On Tuesday 6 November, the wires and social media channels were lit up with a seemingly significant piece of cobalt news: Glencore had pulled 1,472 tonnes of cobalt hydroxide from the market. The basis for the world’s leading producer to act in this way… Read More Here

ECA welcomes the progress made in the implementation of the first electric battery manufacturing plant in Africa

The DRC and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) are keen to speed up the operationalization of the cross-border Special Economic Zone where the first manufacturing plant for electric battery precursors will be installed. The issue was at the centre of a high-level meeting on Wednesday (October 5th) at ECA headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On this occasion, it was a question of evaluating the process of creating a regional value chain with the installation of the first manufacturing plant for electric battery precursors in the province of… Read More Here

Zimbabwe announces $2.83 billion deal to locally process several metals, including lithium

Zimbabwe is currently the only African country to produce lithium. While Namibia, DRC, Ghana or Mali are preparing to join it, Harare is already exploring other ways to better take advantage of this resource. In Harare on Friday, September 16, the government of Zimbabwe initialed a $2.83 billion memorandum of understanding with Chinese companies Eagle Canyon International Group and Pacific Goal Investment Ltd. The tripartite partnership concerns the construction in the southern African country of an industrial complex spread over 5,000 hectares intended to locally transform several metals including lithium. According to… Read More Here

South Africa urged to consider its contribution to the global battery value chain

Batteries are fast becoming the core of modern energy systems and more sustainable economies, underpinning the implementation of smart grids and minigrids, while fostering the rollout of renewable energy and e-mobility, and yet, South Africa’s involvement in the battery value chain remains limited. Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies chief economist Gaylor Montmasson-Clair questions whether South Africa will be an importer of batteries only, or if it will manage to become a part of the value chain. He explains that lithium-ion battery (LIB) cells consist largely of four components: a cathode that determines capacity and average voltage of a battery; the anode that comprises the negative… Read More Here
