Glencore to build UK battery recycling plant

Switzerland-based mining company Glencore has entered a joint venture with a Britain-based investor in battery cell technologies and research and development, Britishvolt, to build a battery recycling system in the UK, including a new plant. The agreement, according to Glencore, would develop a “world-leading ecosystem” for battery recycling in the UK. The plant would be located at the Britannia Refined Metals (BRM) operation in Northfleet. Once complete, the plant will be Glencore and Britishvolt’s first battery recycling facility in the UK, with an expected processing capacity of a minimum of… Read More Here

Glencore, Managem partner to recover cobalt, lithium, nickel from recycled batteries

Diversified miners Glencore and Managem have entered into a partnership to produce cobalt from recycled cobalt, nickel and lithium at Managem’s Compagnie de Tifnout Tiranimine (CTT) hydrometallurgical refinery in Morocco. Glencore and CTT intend to enter into a five-year tolling agreement for 1 200 t/y of recycled cobalt, as well as nickel hydroxide and lithium carbonate. The partnership forms part of Glencore and Managem’s commitments to support the electric vehicle industry in achieving its metals recycling targets. The partnership is conditional on a feasibility study to assess the commercial viability of… Read More Here

Supply squeeze risks are pushing lithium price higher and higher

Lithium has burst into 2022 with a fresh price spike that hands electric-vehicle makers more warning of even sharper cost pressures to come. Supplies of the mainstay battery material face a series of near-term risks that threaten deeper shortages just as demand accelerates with rising global EV adoption. An already-tight market is being roiled by everything from plant maintenance and Winter Olympics curbs in China, to  pandemic-related labor shortages in Australia.  That’s set to ratchet up the squeeze on EV manufacturers after a year that saw global lithium prices almost… Read More Here

Tesla sold a record 70,847 China-made vehicles in December

U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc sold 70,847 China-made vehicles in December, the highest monthly rate since it started manufacturing in Shanghai in 2019, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed on Tuesday. Tesla’s December sales, which included 245 for export, were almost three times the amount achieved in the same month last year and 34% higher than November’s sales.  It also brought Tesla’s total sales of China-made cars for last year to at least 473,078, according to Reuters’ calculations of CPCA’s data, which prior to April did… Read More Here

Solid-State Batteries Promise Electric Car Popularity Boost, But Technical Mountains Await

Solid-state battery technology should be the knight in shining armor for the electric car revolution, as it steps in to slash the cost of batteries and make living with a plug-in car just like an internal combustion engine (ICE) only better. The trouble is, the timetable for adoption keeps slipping and a mass market-ready product isn’t likely this decade, allowing time for other solutions like fuel cells to make up lost ground. Solid-state batteries promise fast, ubiquitous charging, and enough power to outrun ICE cars not just in the city,… Read More Here

lithium-ion battery factory estimated at 39 million USD in the DRC against 112 million USD in China

In a study released during DRC AFRICA BUSINESS FORUM, BloombergNef argues that the Democratic Republic of the Congo could leverage its abundant cobalt resources and hydroelectric power to become a low-cost, low-emission producer country. lithium-ion battery cathode precursors. The research paper estimates that it would cost $ 39 million to build a 10,000 metric tonne cathode precursor plant in the DRC. That’s three times cheaper than a similar factory in the United States would cost, whereas if it was built in China or Poland, it would cost $ 112 million… Read More Here

We remain mobilized to support the battery industry in Africa, starting in the DRC – AfDB Boss

The DRC – Africa Business Forum closed on Thursday in Kinshasa. This high-level forum intends to provide solutions to improve the living conditions of Africans by developing value chains linked to the mining resources used in electric batteries (cobalt, copper, lithium, manganese, nickel, graphite). A way to take advantage of the global transition to green energy, the use of electricity in transport systems and the decarbonisation of economies “We remain mobilized with other partners to support the development of the battery industry in Africa, starting in the Democratic Republic of… Read More Here

How Congo could become low-cost, low-emissions producer of battery materials – report

In a report launched at the DRC-Africa Business Forum 2021 taking place this week in Kinshasa, BloombergNEF (BNEF) states that the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could leverage its abundant cobalt resources and hydroelectric power to become a low-cost and low-emissions producer of lithium-ion battery cathode precursor materials. The research paper estimates that it would cost $39 million to build a 10,000 metric-tonne cathode precursor plant in the DRC. This is three times cheaper than what a similar plant in the US would cost, whereas if it were to be built… Read More Here
