Processing and Issuance of Mining Licenses in Zambia to Improve

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hapenga Monty Kabeta, announced today 12th may that the Mining Cadastre Department has been facing a significant backlog of mining license applications. The backlog accumulated during an eight-month closure of the Cadastre Office, which aimed to review and streamline its operations, following its reopening in November 2022. Since resuming operations, the department has received over 2000 applications, which are currently being processed. Over 20,000 Mining Employees Miss Out on NAPSA’s Benefits in Zambia

Successive Zambian government has awarded tax and non-tax incentives to large-scale mining companies resulting in over 20,000 employees and ex-employees of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) missing out on the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) partial withdrawal benefits even after working for over a decade for the two mining houses. Zimbabwe to Launch Gold-Backed Digital Currency

Zimbabwe’s central bank has announced plans to introduce a gold-backed digital currency to the public from May 8th. The move is aimed at stabilizing the country’s currency, which has fallen 35% against the US dollar this year, and providing an alternative to the US dollar for transactions. The digital tokens will be sold through banks in local and foreign currency at a 20% margin above the interbank mid-rate, and will be introduced in two phases.
