Gold nears 5-month peak as inflation worries boost appeal

Gold prices neared a five-month high touched in the previous session, after strong U.S. consumer price data prompted a rush into the precious metal seen as a hedge against inflation. Spot gold was up 0.6% at $1,861.39 per ounce. U.S. gold futures for December delivery settled 0.8% higher at $1,863.90 per ounce. “The market is spooked with yesterday’s CPI data coming in as high as it was. Traders are looking at gold as being a safety asset, as a hedge against this inflation risk,” said Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist… Read More Here

JOHNSON MATTHEY EXITS BATTERY MATERIALS BUSINESS IN BLOW TO EUROPE

Johnson Matthey’s shares plunged as much as 20% on Thursday after the British chemicals company said it would exit its battery materials business due to crushing competition and that CEO Robert MacLeod would step down next year. The London-listed company said potential returns from the battery materials unit could not justify investments anymore as it struggles to compete with more established large scale and low cost producers. It was looking at a sale of all or part of the unit, with the “ultimate intention of exiting”. “This decision will allow us to… Read More Here

China’s export growth beat forecasts, helped by booming global demand ahead of the winter holiday season, an easing power crunch and an improvement in supply chains that have been badly disrupted by the pandemic. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange had gained 1.5% to $9 633.50 a tonne by 10:00 GMT, having lost about 8% since October 18. “We’ve had a very deep correction from the run-up in October and now it looks like we’re finally finding a plateau from where the market will stabilise,” said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank in Copenhagen. “Risk appetite seen through the stock market remains pretty robust and… Read More Here
