Glencore underpins cobalt prices post covid-19

A year ago Glencore announced it was halting operations at its Mutanda copper-cobalt mine in the Congo, breathing life into a market that was trading at levels 70% below its peak, hit 18 months before.  Given that Mutanda is the world’s largest cobalt mine and responsible for around a fifth of global output in a market of just 135kt per year, market reaction was muted. Congo dominates world cobalt production and Mutanda was responsible for 60% of the Swiss commodities giant’s annual output. While mine output has been largely undisturbed… Read More Here

Germany to extract lithium from thermal water reservoirs

Researchers at Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have developed an environmentally friendly process to extract lithium from the salty thermal water reservoirs that are located in the Upper Rhine Trench. Similar to other initiatives that are taking place in the UK, the German scientists want to recover the white metal using minimally invasive processes. The mechanism they have come up with consists of filtering out lithium ions from the thermal water and then further concentrating them until lithium can be precipitated as a salt.  “As far as we know, there can… Read More Here

That was the highest level for the steelmaking raw material since January 2014 and brings gains for 2020 to 40%. EV Metal Index surges 64% as Europe tops China

Europe has now overtaken China – not long ago responsible for every other electric car sold worldwide – as the globe’s largest EV market.  Over the first seven months of the year, Europe’s electric vehicle sales (including plug-in hybrids) outpaced that of China reaching the half million mark thanks to record-breaking monthly sales of 53,000 units on the continent in July.  More remarkable considering Chinese so-called New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sales data also include fuel cell and commercial vehicles. July was also the first month of annualized positive growth  in China with sales… Read More Here
