AngloGold shuts Mponeng mine after finding 164 coronavirus cases

AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine in South Africa has been temporarily closed after 164 workers tested positive for the coronavirus, the gold miner said in a statement on Sunday. The mine, the deepest in the world, only reopened in April after being shut under a nationwide lockdown and had been operating at around 50% capacity. Diamonds reserves in Russia, Congo and Botswana combined account for at least 80.6% of the world’s total, estimated at about 1.1 billion million carats, a report released on Wednesday shows. USGS Mining Production Data for 2019 An estimated 140,000 tonnes of cobalt were mined in 2019, with the Democratic Republic of Congo contributing 71% to the world supply. Bloomberg NEF estimated planned mining production in 2019 at 164,000 tonnes of cobalt.
