How lithium can be efficiently extracted from oil and gas wastewater

New research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences proposes the idea of rapidly extracting lithium from contaminated water.  The process described in the paper is expected to simplify lithium extraction from aqueous brines, potentially creating a much larger supply and reducing the costs of the element for batteries to power electric vehicles, electronics and a wide range of other devices.  After describing that, at present, lithium is most commonly sourced from salt brines in South America using solar evaporation, a costly process that can take years and wastes much of the lithium along… Read More Here

BMW orders up $24 billion of batteries as EV demand grows

BMW AG has boosted orders for battery cells to keep pace with accelerating demand for electric cars that made up more than 11% of deliveries during the half of the year.  The German carmaker now has contracts for more than 20 billion euros ($23.8 billion) of batteries, up from 12 billion euros previously, Chief Executive Officer Oliver Zipse said in an interview. The cells are destined for i4 sedans, iX sport utility vehicles and other models BMW is producing through 2024. The company plans to start switching to a new… Read More Here

Soaring EV demand keeps driving lithium price

A boom in demand for electric vehicles (EVs) as countries including China work to reduce carbon emissions keeps boosting the lithium price. The average price for lithium carbonate reached $16,500 a tonne in August (hydroxide ex-works China mid-August), according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, up from $6,124 a tonne last December. EV sales jumped in the first half of 2021, despite components shortage, pandemic-forced production interruptions, and longer-term weakness in the overall market, The Hindu reported. Nearly 2.6 million electric cars were sold, a 160% jump compared to H1 2020. EV sales in China… Read More Here

Tesla needs to perform delicate balancing act when it comes to lithium mining – expert

Tesla’s promise to slash battery costs by 50% has led the carmaker to dabble into a whole new field of making its own battery cells and, therefore, looking into manufacturing cathodes and extracting associated raw materials. But the risks linked to this new line of work mean that Tesla has to perform a delicate balancing act where it tends the increasing demand for electric vehicles and the fact that activists, car buyers, and investors want every step of the process of making an EV to be respectful towards the environment… Read More Here

AVZ Minerals identifies spodumene-rich zones from new drillholes at Manono lithium-tin project

Wide-spaced resource drilling at the Carriere de l’Este pegmatite deposit within AVZ Minerals’ (ASX: AVZ) Manono lithium-tin project in the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed high-grade mineralisation directly beneath thin soil and laterite cover. Assay results from four new “step-out” holes located on section lines along strike from initial drilling in 2017 have identified additional high-grade spodumene-rich zones for future infill resource estimation programs. Best intersections included 12.05 metres at 2.41% lithium oxide and 735 parts per million tin; 21.09m at 2.1% lithium oxide and 943ppm tin; and 16m at 2.49%… Read More Here
