Germany to extract lithium from thermal water reservoirs

Researchers at Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have developed an environmentally friendly process to extract lithium from the salty thermal water reservoirs that are located in the Upper Rhine Trench. Similar to other initiatives that are taking place in the UK, the German scientists want to recover the white metal using minimally invasive processes. A rapid roll-out of battery megafactories across China and Europe will drive a fourfold increase in global lithium-ion cell capacity by 2030 compared to 2019, according to consultancy Wood Mackenzie. Wood Mac said capacity could reach 1.3 terrawatt-hours (TWh) by the end of the decade, pointing to 119 battery factories that are either operational, under construction or have been announced by more than 50 manufacturers. Finland launches new battery metal traceability project amid Covid-19

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Geological Survey of Finland GTK have launched a new battery materials tracing platform, the Battrace project, aimed at enhancing sustainability in the mining industry. AVZ Minerals has announced an equity placement of A$10,687,500 to Yibin Tianyi Lithium Industry through the issue of 237,500,000 shares at 4.5 cents per share.
